Attendance

Illness and First Day Call

If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, please inform us by telephone or email, on each day of absence, before 9.00am. If you do not supply us with this information, your child’s absence will be marked as unauthorised, as we do not know the reason for absence.

Medical/Dental Appointments

We ask that you please try to arrange appointments outside school hours, however we know this is not always possible. In which case, appointments should be made early in the school day or towards the end of the school day. Your child is expected to attend school before or after the appointment.

Request for Term Time Leave

Every term, we are inundated with requests for term time leave, particularly before and after a school holiday, which has a huge impact on our attendance. We do not authorise term time leave.

Penalty Notices

We are a maintained school and follow Newham’s attendance procedures. You could be subject to a fine of £60 for any of the following reasons:

  • Your child’s attendance falls below 90 per cent in a term
  • You take your child out of school during term time
  • Your child is delayed returning from a period of leave
  • Your child arrives at school after the registers have closed more than 10 times

Celebrating Attendance

The highest attenders are recognised in assembly, at the end of each term. There is also an end of year celebration.

Attendance Percentages

Our attendance target, for all pupils, is 100% and we have a core expectation that all pupils achieve over 96% attendance. Anything below 94% is considered poor attendance and under 90% is a serious concern. Below 90% is regarded as persistent absence by the Department of Education.

At the end of each half term, we identify all pupils whose attendance has fallen below 90% and issue a letter of concern. We then monitor the pupils’ attendance on a weekly basis, whilst supporting the family further if needed, with hope to see a pattern of improved attendance developing.
