Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium grant is an amount of money the government allocates to each school, to support all pupils to reach their potential. It is particularly aimed at pupils coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may also be in receipt of free school meals.

Colegrave Primary pupil premium funding for 2018/19 was £328,640 and for 2019/20 was £330,540.

In 2020/21 the school has been funded £280,140. Please see below for our Pupil Premium strategy for spending the funding in 2020/21.

Our Rationale

As a school we believe that every child should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential and a disadvantaged background should not hold any child back. We endeavour to narrow the gap for our vulnerable pupils and use the Pupil Premium grant in the following ways:

  • Teaching and learning opportunities to meet the needs of all pupils;
  • Appropriate provision for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, including ensuring the needs of socially disadvantaged are adequately assessed and addressed;
  • Allocating the funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged; and
  • Allocating the funding following a ‘needs analysis’ to identify priority class, groups or individuals.
  • Vulnerable pupils and groups of pupils are identified through termly Pupil Progress Meeting (PPM), safeguarding and behaviour meetings as well as whole school data analysis.

The targeted and strategic use of Pupil Premium will support us in achieving our vision. All our work through the Pupil Premium is aimed at accelerating progress and closing attainment gaps, providing our disadvantaged pupils with the same foundations as their peers.


We use Pupil Premium for a range of interventions and support services, including:

  • Small group catch up support focussed on overcoming gaps
  • 1:1 support for those who need additional support (RWI, reading and maths)
  • Speech and language support
  • Additional Year 6 teacher to support with English and maths
  • Tailored curriculum intervention for mainstream SEN pupils
  • AHT’s providing additional support and allowing smaller teaching groups in English and Maths
  • Learning mentor support for those presenting emotional, behavioural and mental well-being needs
  • More able enterprise initiative
  • Thrive interventions for the emotional, behavioural and mental well-being of pupils
  • Drama and debating sessions to raise self-esteem and confidence


It will be the responsibility of the Deputy Headteacher, to produce termly reports for the Headteacher and Governors.  The reports will outline:

  • The progress made per year group, towards diminishing the difference between disadvantaged pupils
  • An outline of the provision that was made since the last meeting
  • It will be the responsibility of the Headteacher for this information to be made known to the full governing body
  • The Governors of the school will ensure that there is an annual statement to parents on how the Pupil Premium funding has been used to address the issue of ‘narrowing the gap’ for vulnerable pupils. This task will be carried out within the requirements published by the Department for Education.
